Is backing necessary on a fly reel?

However, it’s much better to have some backing on the reel first. Most reels will have room for about fifty yards of twenty pound backing. This will raise the level of your fly line up closer to the top edge of your fly reel so it won’t fly off the line in coils. Backing is also helpful when you hook big fish.

Are Galvan fly reels good?

The Galvan reels have been one of our favorite fly reels, and the slightly larger T-5 won our last 5/6 weight Reel Shootout. The Galvan Torque reels have proven to be wonderful reels. They are light but very durable.

Click and Pawl drag systems are simple and effective and can handle a variety of species. This style of reel get their name from the metal tooth, or “pawl”, that is attached to the spool. The second component of a click and pawl mechanism is gear that is fixed to the center of the frame.

An Anti Reverse reel has a mechanism between the retrieving handle and the spool. This allows a fish to pullline off of the reel whenever a fish fulls the line with a force greater than the drag setting. As line is pulled off the reel, the retrieving handle does not spin with the spool.
