The first option for a two fly setup, and the easiest to start with, is attaching the dropper to the bend of the hook of the point fly. For this setup, you will rig up your leader and tippet as if you are going to fish with just one fly. Once you have that fly attached to your leader, it becomes your point fly.

Should the heavier fly be on top or bottom?
On a 2 fly rig the heaviest fly is always the bottom (point). The flies are attached to a 4′ to 8′ fluorocarbon leader with 4-5″ tags that are created with Surgeon’s or Blood knots. The distance from the middle fly to the fly line should be 1 1/2 times the depth you are fishing.
What is a dropper fly fishing?
So we’ve already established that using a dropper simply means fishing with an additional fly or flies, and the reason many anglers prefer fishing with this technique is that when used correctly it can help to increase their chances of catching a fish, in some cases even enabling them to catch multiple fish at once!

What is a tippet used for in fly fishing?
So what is tippet? Tippet is a specific gauge monofilament line that is attached to the end of the leader, to which you tie the fly. The tippet is usually the smallest gauge line on your rig and is virtually invisible to the fish. Tippet is also very flexible and allows your fly to float or swim more naturally.
Can you fish two dry flies?
It can be tough to figure out which morsel the fish are eating! To present two dry flies at once tie a piece of tippet to the bend of the hook using an improved clinch knot. Make sure you moisten the monofilament prior to cinching it down to maintain maximum strength. See the video that explains how to tie this below.
What is Tandem rigging?
What is a tandem fly?
A tandem rig is simply a multiple-fly setup. While some anglers will use three or more flies on one line, the most common rig is a two-fly, inline setup: the fly tied to the main line with a second fly tied to follow behind it.
How deep can you fish with a fly rod?
25โฒ of T-14 can reach the 40-50โฒ range and T-17 can reach the 60-75โฒ range. Under ideal conditions you can get deeper but those depths can be reached without too much effort by casting up-drift letting the line come tight after the boat drifts over it.
How far should split shot be from fly?
Loss of strike detection is valid, though, and there’s not much you can do about it. You can keep the shot close to your point fly to keep the loss to a minimum. I like 4-6 inches. (You can also drop-shot, but that’s a topic for another post.)
Do you use weights when fly fishing?
In order to get your flies into the feeding zone on the bottom of the river, you need to have enough tippet or leader between your strike indicator and flies (typically 1.5X – 2X the depth of the water being fished), and you will need to add weight.
How long should a dropper be fly fishing?
A good general rule of thumb is to hang a dropper from around 6-8 inches or so. Any shorter, and your fly won’t drift properly. Too long, and you risk getting tangled.

To boot, tippet rings are light and can be used for dry fly fishing. Being able to convert your nymph or streamer rig in a jiffy to fish dry flies will come in handy when fish begin to rise to surface insects.
Can I fly fish without tippet?
No, you do not need tippet for fly fishing. In fact, it is perfectly acceptable to tie a fly directly to the end of your leader. Only when you are nymphing, or fishing with multiple flies, does tippet become a critical component for your fly fishing rig.
Can you use regular fishing line as tippet?
Yes. You can use whatever you want for the tippet.
How long should a tippet be on a fly rod?
Tippets are usually between 2 to 4 feet long. Most expert anglers advice that the length of your tippet should correspond with the length of your leader. If your leader’s 10 to 12 feet for example, then you should opt for tippets that are 2 to 4 feet. If the leader’s longer, you’ll want to go with a longer tippet.
