At the Half Moon Inn, we have seven miles of private fishing on the River Torridge. The four miles on the Upper River adjacent to Sheepwash provide superb fishing for wild brown trout, while the beats on the Middle and Lower River provide excellent salmon and seat trout fishing.

The fishing consists of two miles of the lower reaches of the beautiful river Torridge and is prolific for salmon, sea trout and brown trout.

Where does the River Torridge rise?

The River Torridge rises near Meddon. The river describes a long loop through Devon farming country where its tributaries the Lew and Okement join before meeting the Taw at Appledore and flowing into the Bristol Channel. The river is spate dependent and often flows between wooded banks which can be steep.

Do you need a Licence to fish the River Tamar?

Restrictions. Bait digging for personal use does not require a licence and is unrestricted around the Tamar Estuaries in most cases, with the following exceptions: An area off Saltash where, under Cornwall Council local byelaws, bait digging is not permitted.

Can you fish rivers in close season?

You can fish for salmon and sea trout during the coarse fish close season, but you must have a migratory salmon licence and can only use certain types of lures and baits in some areas. Last year’s closed season was one of our busiest, as we saw many new anglers enter the sport.
